Life is not always happy, happy, happy, but I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that. When you have kids, you’re running them around to soccer practice, swimming, basketball, and maybe even football depending on their gender.

If you’re constantly on the go, no matter how much energy you have, there’s bound to be times when you feel drained.

Maybe even sad.

A humor therapy file is just what you need to let go of stress, tiredness, and perk up your spirits.

Here’s why:

1. Humor has Physical Benefits.

According to Psychology Today, “laughter – especially a hearty laugh – has been shown to benefit your circulation, lungs and muscles (especially those around the belly area). Humor also helps people deal with pain and physical adversity.”

By creating a file in advance, you have all the laughter you need at your fingertips.

2. Humor has Emotional Benefits.

When I was going through a divorce from a relationship that was more hurtful than helpful, I sought humor everyday. I remember needing that relief to guard against negative thoughts.

I can still remember driving home from work, going through my favorite part of Atlanta – Little Five Points. Everyday, I’d see someone who looked interesting. And it wasn’t usually their unique style that was interesting, it was what they were doing.

On this one day, I was watching the people on the sidewalk as I drove along and noticed two men on electric scooters.

They were chasing each other down the sidewalk, each trying to pass the other. Carefree and fun, it looked like they were having a good time chasing each other.

By focusing on humor, you refocus your thoughts on something other than what’s going on in your life. When you most need it, your file is right there waiting for you to rediscover it.

3. Humor puts People at Ease Around You.

If you can master even one joke and use it when you’re in a group, you’ll instantly lighten any awkwardness. Used in speeches, humor helps to get an audience to bond with you.

I’ve heard of some speakers who collect years and years worth of humor to use in their speeches. Some have even written books with many of their anecdotes in them.

4. You put Love in Motion.

C’mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev’rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

– The Youngbloods

Your mood is uplifted. Others smile at you. Smiling has its instant effect mood-lifting energy that, even when you feel down, will help you feel better.

What’s better than sharing that smile with others? They smile back at you and then pass it on to the next person. It’s a neverending smile-love-fest.

5. When others aren’t Available, Your File is.

Even if you can count on your best friend every other time, the one time you call, she’s not there or doesn’t answer the phone. She’s probably taking care of whatever needs her attention in the moment.

But don’t let that stop you from being cheered up in the moment. Look into your humor therapy file and see what catches your attention. You might find an old comic strip that is just as effective as it was the first time you read it.

6. You Need a Break.

Busy, busy, busy. We all are nowadays. Whether you’re working and reading this, taking a break from your son or daughter, or catching up on blog posts after a long day of work, you can use a break.

So create your humor therapy file and take one. It’s fun to search for funny things and you’ll never know what you’ll find.

Just imagine you’re on an adventure to scout out the funniest things you can find on the internet, in magazines, in the newspapers. Wherever you feel is right to look.

7. You Can Help Someone Else.

Let’s say your best friend calls YOU for some humor therapy. Just reach into your file and pull out one you know will make her howl with laughter. Problem solved.

You just made her day. Fun, right?
